Art and architecture

Yesterday we topped off our night by having dinner at a restaurant that serves food prepared according to how food was served in the Middle Ages.

The restaurant entrance below.

You went down these stairs into a candlelit stone hall. There were musicians playing medieval instruments . I thought I made a video but alas I was mistaken.

The menu was interesting. Thank goodness it was in English.

I got fried beans (left) and some kind of tomato grits pie. Very interesting and good too!

No telling how old this place might be! Loved it!

Walking the short block home we passed these old city buildings in the town hall square. Very ornate!

Today we were in for a great day of touring Riga. We did a two hour walking tour with a guide and learned so many interesting things as well as meeting some fascinating people. We were the only Americans on the tour along with people from Tasmania, Denmark, Croatia, Germany , a single Korean girl, and two retired ladies from Thailand! Our Latvian guide was very knowledgeable and spoke good English. At the end of the tour, they gave us tiny glasses of the national drink called Black Balsam. It had lots of herb flavors so I liked it!

After the tour we walked through the beautiful park

to the area of town where the beautiful art nouveau buildings were located. These buildings are the largest collection of art nouveau buildings in Europe, over 800 facades. This is the reason Riga was declared a Unesco World Heritage site.

This was the absolute best one of the incredible buildings we saw walking around several blocks. Truly amazing. Riga surprised me. I'm not ready to leave tomorrow as there are so many things I did not get to see.

We also went to a restored art nouveau home and toured the interior.

Docents were in costume.

The spiral staircase going up was pretty cool.

The view out the bedroom window of the house across the street.

My selfie!

Tomorrow it's back to the bus station and on to Tallinn, Estonia!
